Justina and I had a bit of time left on our Zipcar last night, so we decided to venture out to the suburban wasteland across the river for some Krispy Kreme (car-sharing-induced traffic, ha!). The big donut assembly line is pretty neat—but not entirely foolproof, as you can see. I watched this little guy flub his dismount from the oven conveyor, which got him out of sync for the flipper in the fry bath, so he never got cooked on top. I wonder how many of them end up like that?

When we went to the one in pgh, occasionally doughnuts would get stuck in the frier, creating a doghnutjam of burning doghnut badness. This was rather catastrophic, and happened more than once in the hour or so we were there.

Did you figure out how they get the holes in the middle? We didn’t. And we saw them switch from torus to sphere mode while we were there.

In the first trip I ever did in a ZipCar, I found a printout in the door of a map from the ZipCar location to the Medford KK, which (since I was passing by) inspired me to make a stop there.

I’m now wondering what percentage of ZipCar rentals go through that drivethrough.

    Rod.

We didn’t witness any fiery doughnut catastrophes, though I did notice the large number of sprinklers above the frying vat. As for the holes, they’ve apparently got a top-seekrit extruder that oozes out dough in cylindrical form.
